A 46-year-old Philadelphia man was convicted today for the home invasion burglary and attempted sexual assault of a woman inside a Bensalem Township apartment in October 2025.
Louis Sophie, of Southampton Road, was convicted of several felony and misdemeanor counts following a waiver trial before Bucks County Common Pleas Court Judge Wallace H. Bateman Jr. The charges include two counts of first-degree felony burglary and third-degree felony criminal trespassing, along with misdemeanor counts of simple assault, attempted indecent assault-without consent, and attempted indecent assault-forcible compulsion.
Judge Bateman deferred sentencing pending an evaluation by the Sexual Offender Assessment Board (SOAB).
The conviction follows an investigation by the Bensalem Township Police Department that began on Oct. 28, 2025, at approximately 2:48 PM. Officers responded to the Lafayette Gardens complex after receiving a 911 call reporting an attack.
According to police, Sophie entered the victim’s apartment through an unlocked front door, grabbed her, and began removing his clothing while making suggestive remarks. The victim fought back against her attacker and screamed for help, forcing Sophie to flee the apartment. He then crossed the Poquessing Creek into Philadelphia on foot.
Bensalem Police officers quickly flooded the surrounding area and stopped Sophie at a Sunoco gas station located at the intersection of Frankford Avenue and Knights Road in Philadelphia. Officers identified Sophie, a registered sex offender, as the attacker matching the victim’s description.
During today’s trial, Deputy District Attorney Monica W. Furber, who prosecuted the case, presented compelling evidence that established Sophie’s guilt. Among those testifying were the victim, who bravely recounted the traumatic attack and her struggle against her assailant, as well as several Bensalem Township police officers who detailed the swift response, the physical evidence collected at the scene, and the coordinated search that led to Sophie’s apprehension shortly after he fled.
“This terrifying ordeal highlights both the resilience of the victim, the exceptional, rapid response of the Bensalem Township Police Department, and the diligent prosecution by Deputy District Attorney Monica Furber,” said Bucks County District Attorney Joe Khan. “Because of them our community is safer today. We will continue to hold violent offenders accountable and fight for victims of sexual assault.”
