A lifetime devoted to serving others is being recognized in Millcreek Township, where James Jones has spent decades helping both his country and his community.
Jones served a remarkable 37 years in the United States military, beginning his career in the U.S. Navy before later re-enlisting in the Army. His commitment to service did not stop with the military.
For the past 58 years, Jones has also been a volunteer firefighter with the West Ridge Fire Department, dedicating much of his life to protecting residents and responding to emergencies.
When Jones first sought to join the department, becoming a firefighter was not immediate. At the time, the West Ridge Fire Department was limited to 50 firefighters and maintained a waiting list that left him waiting six months before he could begin serving.
Over the years, Jones says the department became more than a fire company. He describes it as a fraternity built on teamwork, friendship and a willingness to help one another. Whether responding to an emergency or helping a fellow firefighter with a home project, Jones recalls members always stepping up when needed.
“If you needed help putting a roof on, 20 firefighters would be there to help,” he said, reflecting on the camaraderie that has defined the department for generations.
After nearly six decades with the fire service and nearly four decades in the military, Jones’ record of dedication stands as an example of selfless service. From answering the call overseas to protecting lives and property at home, he has spent much of his life giving back to others.
For his unwavering commitment to the community and the nation, Erie County is thanking James Jones for his many years of service.
