The Philadelphia Flyers picked up their first preseason win Thursday night, shutting out the Boston Bruins 2 0 at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

Matvei Michkov scored in his preseason debut, while Cole Knuble added another exhibition goal and Joseph Woll stopped all 28 shots he faced for the shutout.

Michkov makes his preseason debut

Michkov wasted little time making an impact in his first preseason appearance, scoring the opening goal for Philadelphia.

Following the game, Michkov kept things in perspective when discussing the performance. “We need ready for next game. This is just preseason. And the next step better,” Michkov said as he emphasizes focus on the upcoming regular season.

Knuble continues to impress

Knuble added another goal in the third period, continuing what has been an impressive preseason for the young forward.

After scoring and recording an assist in the Flyers’ preseason opener, Knuble found the scoresheet again and continues to make his case as Philadelphia evaluates its roster.

He also got to experience his first preseason game at home in front of a loud Philadelphia crowd. “Yeah, it’s cool. Obviously, great fans in this city, and playing at home is always fun,” Knuble said.

His production and energy have made him one of the young players worth watching as the Flyers get closer to the regular season. 

Woll delivers a shutout

With Dan Vladar dealing with an upper body injury, Woll’s performance was particularly important. He stopped all 28 shots he faced, giving Philadelphia its first shutout of the preseason and providing some stability in net. The performance could become even more significant if Vladar’s injury keeps him out for any amount of time.

Power play still a work in progress

While the Flyers had plenty of positives, Rick Tocchet made it clear there is still work to do.

The bench boss stated the power play remains a work in progress, something Philadelphia will need to improve as the preseason moves along.

The Flyers now have another game to continue working through those issues, while players like Michkov and Knuble continue building toward the regular season.

For one night, though, Philadelphia got exactly what it needed: goals from two of its young forwards and a perfect performance from Woll in net.
