PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — An AccuWeather Alert has been issued for Saturday as a weekend nor’easter is set to hit the region, bringing high wind, heavy rain and flooding to the Jersey Shore and parts of the Philadelphia region.
The storm was gathering strength Friday along the central East Coast, pounding beaches in several states with heavy surf and threatening to bring coastal flooding, wind and rain to parts of the Northeast through the weekend.
A High Wind Watch is in place Friday and Saturday along the Jersey Shore, where gusts could reach 60 mph.
Saturday through Monday, windy rain showers will be off and on from New Jersey to Maine.
Waves up to 12 feet are possible through Saturday.
Nor’easters get their name because winds over the coastal area are typically from the northeast. These storms may occur at any time of year but are most frequent and most violent between September and April.
Nor’easters nearly always bring precipitation in the form of heavy rain or snow, as well as gale-force winds, rough seas, and coastal flooding.
