PITTSBURGH — The City of Pittsburgh has declared Sept. 25 “Dolly Parton Day.”
The proclamation was given to the executive director of Reading Ready Pittsburgh, Dr. Mary Denison, on Friday morning by City of Pittsburgh Community Affairs Liaison CJ Thorpe at the literacy organization’s “A Brighter Day: Celebrating Dolly’s Legacy” event at a free bookstore in Homestead.
The City of Pittsburgh says the Dolly Parton Imagination Library had delivered a total of 306,532 free books to families since 2019 at the time of her death.
“We are incredibly grateful to the City of Pittsburgh for honoring Dolly in this meaningful way,” said Dr. Denison. “Dolly understood that putting books into the hands and homes of young children can change the trajectory of their lives. We’re proud to carry that vision forward in Pittsburgh through the Imagination Library and to celebrate her remarkable legacy by helping even more children discover the joy of reading.”
Officials chose to go with Sept. 25 because of its nod to Parton’s iconic song and movie role, “9 to 5.”
