The Pennsylvania Department of Health is reminding residents that nearly any infection can lead to sepsis, a potentially life-threatening medical emergency.

Possible signs and symptoms include clammy skin, confusion, discomfort, fever or chills, a high heart rate, a weak pulse and shortness of breath. Anyone experiencing symptoms of sepsis should seek medical care immediately.

To reduce the risk of infection, residents should keep their hands clean and properly care for cuts and wounds. They can also speak with a health care provider about additional preventive measures.
