Colors of Creation is a very cool immersive and interactive exhibit, now open inside the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History. I saw an ad for it on Facebook and decided to try it with my kids this week. It’s FREE to the public through October 4th. We didn’t know what to expect, but had nothing to lose. Wow, were we impressed. It was so cool, and perfect for kids, young kids especially.

You walk into this big dark open space. There’s a sort of kidney bean looking cut-out in the carpet. You stand in the middle of it and wait for the magic. It starts out slow. A bright light in the center, and then lots of bright and colored lights. The kids chased them around the room. Then, things really open up.

The show highlights the beauty of life on earth. Plants, birds, butterflies, humans, rain and clouds and rainbows, and even dinosaurs. You can dance and interact with the weather, the trees and leaves, birds on the walls, and fish in the sea. See footprints trailing behind you as you walk. The music drives the entire show, with very little narration. To describe it without giving too much away, it’s beautiful. Fun for everyone, and beautiful. The interaction on the walls and floor makes it all feel very magical.

If you’re worried about religious content, there really isn’t any. It’s just a light and color show, showing off the beauty of the earth. I’m sure you could read further into the creation part of all of it, but there is no preaching involved. Just beauty.

It’s FREE right now.

Open to the public for free through October 4th.

Timed experience: Wednesday-Friday, 1 pm – 3:40 pm. Saturday & Sunday, 10 am – 3:40 pm.

The entire show is 1/2 hour, but there’s a very fun play space for kids just outside the exhibit space. We spent even more time there. With Magnatiles and light-up blocks and some very cool animal x-rays too.

We could have spent hours in there. Not only that, there are hundreds of books to read, and visitors are invited to choose one to take home. Free of charge.

Build in time for the actual museum. The Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History is what it sounds like. A large museum located smack in the center of Old City, close to anything touristy. I’ve visited before, and I enjoyed my visit, and learned about some pretty prominent Jewish Philadelphians too (Sydney Kimmel for example).

As we approach the holidays, I should also tell you that the gift shop is a must for anyone looking for traditional or quirky Hanukkah gifts. Clutch for anything last minute. Stop by, no shipping needed, but they do ship all over the world. They also do an annual family fun event on Christmas day that’s open to anyone. It’s called Being ____ At Christmas.
