Exeter Community Library, 4569 Prestwick Drive, Exeter Township, will highlight the importance of lifelong learning throughout October with programs supporting the Pennsylvania Library Association’s PA Forward Gold Star initiative. The programs demonstrate ways libraries help residents develop skills for everyday life, focusing on basic literacy, information literacy, civic and social literacy, health literacy and financial literacy.

Art exhibition

The community-based art exhibition “Walk With Us” opens today at 12:15 p.m. at Penn State Berks and runs through Nov. 19. It relates the firsthand experiences of people and families impacted by incarceration and asks the viewer to consider the future of justice in Berks County. It will be followed by a reception in the Perkins Student Center. This event is free and open to the public.

“Walk With Us” features murals and interactive installations designed and facilitated by artists Mike Miller and Theron Cook with participation from people detained in the Berks County Jail System, corrections staff, county administrators and community members.

This exhibit was initiated through a partnership between Building Justice in Berks, The Real Deal 610 and the Vera Institute on Justice.

Talk on Turkey

The World Affairs Council of Greater Reading is holding a luncheon Oct. 14 from 11:30 to 1:15 at Alvernia University’s McGlinn Conference Center. Elizabethtown College Professor Dr. Oya Dursun-Ozkanca will discuss Turkey. Pay by check or cash at the event. See wacreading.org for details.

Assistive technology

Abilities In Motion (abilitiesinmotion.org/) is hosting an assistive technology event Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at AIM’s headquarters, 755 Hiesters Lane, Reading. Presenters will be AIM adaptive esports program manager Erich Odenweller and Jo-Ellen Bloom from Safe in Home. Assistive technology encompasses devices, software and systems that enhance the functional capabilities and independence of people with disabilities, aging populations and people with health conditions. The program will educate people about assistive technology and how it can be used in everyday life.

Clay on Main

Clay on Main, 313 Main St., Oley, is featuring two series of classes in the upcoming weeks:

Kids’ Clay Class is a four-week series held on Sundays through Oct. 18 from 5 to 6 p.m.  Home school clay classes are being held weekly from Oct. 5 to 26.

Clay on Main’s Half Moon Cafe presents a free show with acoustic musician and singer Mike Holliday on Oct. 9 at 7:15 p.m. Larry Ahern and Tim Radway will perform from 8 to 10. A $15 donation is requested.

Wyomissing library

The Wyomissing Public Library, 9 Reading Blvd., is hosting a program on immigration in Berks County today at 6 p.m. The program is presented by Berks Organizing Workgroup and will include a screening of the Academy Award-nominated short film “A Lien” about a young family and their experience in the immigration process. There will be appearances by nationally recognized immigration attorney Bridget Cambria and Adriana Zambrano, programs coordinator at Aldea, which serves immigrants’ needs in Berks.

Penn State Master Gardeners Karyn Spengler and Sandy Weiss will offer a Seed Saving/Seed Collection workshop at the library on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Learn how to collect and save seeds from your vegetable garden harvest, how to store them, how long to store before you need to do anything with them and keeping them over the winter.

Dance event

All Aboard the Joy Train, will be held Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum, 500 S. Third St., Hamburg. It features a 90-minute performance led by the JCWK Dance Lab contemporary dance troupe and the Reading Company Technical and Historical Society. Blessing of Animals

All Souls Ecumenical Catholic Communion, 640 Centre Ave., Reading, is hosting a Blessing of Animals in Honor of St. Francis of Assisi Saturday at 11 a.m. Pets must be leashed or in a carrier. Organizers are requesting donations of pet food to distribute to local animal shelters. There will be representatives from local rescues with some adoptable pets.

For those who have lost a pet, please bring a photo and it will be displayed on a table to be recognized and blessed.

Schuylkill Shuffle

Schuylkill River Greenways will host its first Schuylkill Shuffle on Oct. 10, offering runners and families three ways to enjoy the Schuylkill River Trail while supporting its future. The event at Pottstown Riverfront Park will feature a 5K, 10-mile run and Family Fun Loop. Proceeds benefit the Schuylkill River Trail Stewardship Fund.

The 5K begins at 9 a.m.; the 10-Miler at 9:15 and theFamily Fun Loop at 9:30. Afterward there will be a finish-line celebration featuring apple cider doughnuts, hot cider and Sly Fox beer.

The Wyomissing Animal Hospital’s Barkfest pet costume contest for dogs and cats takes place Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. at 1 Village Drive, Spring Township.

A free Trunk or Treat program will be held Oct. 18 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the hospital, 35 Commerce Drive. There will be crafts, games, candy and food. Leashed pets welcome.

CannFest

Pennsylvania CannFest takes place Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at Renninger’s Antique and Farmers’ Market, 740 Noble St., Kutztown. The event features more than 200 vendors, music, food, education, advocacy and cannabis culture, Vendors are permitted to sell only products allowed under Pennsylvania law. All attendees must be 18 and over, and identification will be checked at the gates.
