Smucker is a Republican who lives in Lancaster County with his wife.

According to his campaign website, his mission is to help families pursue the “American Dream” by promoting freedom, personal accountability and free enterprise. The campaign says Smucker opposes socialist policies and supports public service centered on listening to, respecting and assisting constituents.

Business and legislative experience

Before his election to Congress, Smucker owned and operated the Smucker Company for 25 years. He expanded the small business to employ more than 150 people before leaving the company in 2008.

Smucker later served two terms in the Pennsylvania Senate. While chairing the Senate Education Committee, he worked on measures intended to increase accountability in education spending and expand students’ access to educational opportunities.

Policy priorities

Smucker serves on the House Ways and Means Committee and as vice chair of the House Budget Committee. In those roles, he supports policies intended to rein in federal spending and reduce regulations affecting small businesses.

His campaign also identifies apprenticeships, technical education and retirement security as priorities. Smucker has advocated for expanding career-training opportunities and helping Americans prepare financially for retirement.

Constituent services

Smucker’s campaign says he and his staff have traveled more than 40,000 miles within the congressional district since the beginning of the 115th Congress. He has held more than 2,600 constituent meetings and participated in hundreds of events involving businesses, schools, civic groups and community organizations.

His constituent-services staff has assisted more than 13,252 individuals and families, helping return approximately $50.9 million to constituents, according to his campaign. The Social Security Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of State were the federal agencies for which constituents most frequently requested assistance.
