A cold front moving through central Pennsylvania tonight will bring the season’s first significant snowfall to the northwestern highlands, with a Winter Storm Watch in effect for Warren County from Monday evening through Tuesday afternoon.
The precipitation currently falling across the region will gradually change from rain to snow showers in the northwest and western highlands tonight as temperatures drop.
Warren and western McKean counties could see 1-2 inches of accumulation overnight, with lesser amounts along other western highlands. By Monday night into Tuesday, Warren County may receive more than 6 inches of snow as lake-effect bands intensify.
Roads could become hazardous overnight in northwestern areas as temperatures fall into the 20s around midnight, potentially creating icy conditions on already wet surfaces. Wind gusts into the 20s will push wind chills into the teens in the northwest and 20s elsewhere.
The valleys will stay milder, with most areas southeast of Altoona-State College-Williamsport remaining above freezing until sunrise Monday.
Lake-effect and upslope snow showers will continue Monday into Tuesday across the northern and western parts of the region. This December-like cold air mass will bring the coldest temperatures of the season so far, with gusty winds making it feel even colder.
By midweek, winds will increase further with gusts reaching 30 to 35 mph on Wednesday. The Laurel Highlands could see gusts approaching 40 to 45 mph. Rain and snow shower chances will persist through Friday, especially over northwest Pennsylvania.
Temperatures should begin to moderate by late week, returning closer to seasonal averages. High pressure is expected to build briefly from the west, bringing mainly dry conditions into the beginning of the weekend.
