As one of Erie County’s most celebrated high school football rivalries prepares to take center stage, community members will have a chance to make an impact beyond the field.
The Community Blood Bank, in partnership with Erie News Now, is hosting the “Prep vs. McDowell Blood Drive” on October 2, at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The event, themed “The Rivalry That Gives Back,” encourages fans from both schools to come together and donate blood while supporting a critical community need.
The blood drive will take place from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the stadium ahead of the highly anticipated matchup between Cathedral Prep and McDowell. Donors will receive a free event T-shirt while supplies last.
Community Blood Bank officials say blood donations remain essential to ensuring local hospitals have the resources needed for emergency care, surgeries, cancer treatments, and other lifesaving procedures.
Eligible donors must:
Be at least 17 years old, or 16 with parental consent
Weigh at least 110 pounds
Have not received a tattoo or piercing within the last three months
Be in generally good health and eat before donating
Present a valid photo ID
Appointments can be scheduled in advance using the Community Blood Bank’s online registration system, though walk-ins are also welcome.
Organizers hope the friendly competition between Prep and McDowell fans will help boost donations and make a meaningful difference for patients across the region.
The event is supported by several community partners, including LECOM Health, Erie County Community College, Domino Insurance, and Yaple Vacuum Cleaner Center.
