A pair of low-cost carriers introduced new routes from Pittsburgh International to Florida this week, growing the airport’s collection of flights to the Sunshine State.

Allegiant Air began a flight from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Friday. One-way fares start at $59.

Breeze Airways is expanding its Pittsburgh International footprint with a new seasonal route to Vero Beach, Fla., that launched Thursday.

Vero Beach is located along Florida’s Treasure Coast in the southeastern part of the state. The city has a population of roughly 16,000 and is known for its golf courses and fishing.

Breeze’s new route offers service every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, starting at $74 for a one-way trip.

Breeze currently offers 16 routes from Pittsburgh International, giving it one of the largest varieties of any carrier at the airport. The airline’s expansion to Vero Beach should be a popular trip for vacationers and retirees, spokesman Ryne Williams said.

“A destination like Vero Beach offers our guests from Pittsburgh a nonstop flight, and a previously unserved market, to a relaxed Florida destination we know they’ll love, especially during those cold winter months,” he said.

Breeze will introduce two more seasonal flights from Pittsburgh in January: Cancún, Mexico, and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.
