PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — After three decades helping Philadelphians become homeowners, James Dailey is beginning a new chapter in public service as a Temple University police officer.
Dailey, 52, recently completed training at the Temple University Police Academy, becoming one of the oldest people to finish the university’s cadet program.
“I wanted a challenge. I wanted something different, and thought about policing, and something that would be beneficial to the community and allow me to help people,” Dailey said.
Dailey said the academy’s training was demanding, including active shooter simulations and physical training exercises.
He joked that returning to the classroom was one of the most challenging adjustments, particularly the homework and tests.
As the oldest member of his cadet class, Dailey often found himself relating more closely to the instructors than his fellow recruits.
“We would joke about things,” he said. “Most of the instructors were my age, so I would explain references that they never heard of.”
Dailey said he hopes the experience he gained throughout his previous career will benefit him in his new role.
“I’m hoping some of the life experiences I have will be benefit to some situations,” he said.
Dailey is scheduled to officially become a Temple University police officer on Friday. The academy’s graduation ceremony is set for 3 p.m. at Temple Ambler.
