From the playground to the campus, Philadelphia is losing its young people. According to Census Bureau data, Philadelphia lost nearly 10% of its under-18 residents between 2010 and 2025, with losses accelerating for children under 5 (12%), even as the city’s overall population grew 3%. It’s part of a statewide gerontrifying trend – and may have something to do with the School District of Philadelphia welcoming 4,236 fewer students than projected this September. Meanwhile, Temple University has lost nearly a quarter of last year’s record-large incoming class, the biggest single-year decline in over a decade.
