October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and AHN Saint Vincent is getting involved with a series of events focused on education, awareness, and support.
For many people, breast cancer has touched their family, a friend, or their own life.
That’s why AHN Saint Vincent is spending the month focused on more than fundraising. Staff say it’s about education, support, and encouraging people to stay on top of their health.
“Most leading cause of cancer in women after skin cancer, so making us aware of it helps finding disease early and hence cure early and giving a longevity to our patients,” said one provider. “Don’t skip your screening mammogram. Don’t skip doing the clinical exam by your physician. Don’t skip being aware of your own breasts.” Doctor Jennifer Saldanha MD, FACS said.
Friday’s efforts gave people the chance to meet face-to-face with medical staff and learn more about breast health.
But the efforts don’t end there. Activities will continue throughout October with several fundraising and awareness events.
A bake sale and flower sale are planned in the hospital’s main lobby, while the Plymouth Tavern will host a celebrity bartending event on October 28 to help raise funds.
Pink ribbons will also be available for purchase in the hospital cafeteria and lobby café, with proceeds benefiting local breast cancer awareness and education efforts.
They hope those conversations lead to action.
“50% of women have dense breast tissue, and that’s one of the number one things women come and say to me,” another provider said. “Understanding what that means is key. Staff say every dollar raised will help support local breast cancer awareness and education efforts.
