City-run grocery stores could be coming to Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Philadelphia City Council is working to address food insecurity with a bill that proposes the idea of creating an affordable city-run grocery store.
Council President Kenyatta Johnson introduced the Philly Food Affordability Act. The bill would create the “Office of Food and Nutrition Security.”
That office would focus on collecting data, coordinating food access initiatives and hold a hearing on the practicality of creating a city-run store.
If approved, voters will decide on the bill next May.
It would go into effect in 2028.
