On Friday, Oct. 9, a horrific shooting on the east side of Erie left nine people dead, including the 45-year-old man who killed seven family members and one family friend before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot. Investigators from the Erie Bureau of Police continue to piece together what happened and why.

The following is what is – and is not – known about the mass shooting at this time, based on information from law enforcement as of Sunday, Oct. 11. This will be updated as more information is released.

Time of shooting

At 4:53 p.m., Friday, Oct. 9, the city’s ShotSpotter gunshot detection system and several 911 calls alerted police to a shooting on the city’s east side. Police were on scene in under three minutes, Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah said. Upon arrival, they found two gunshot victims, a 51-year-old woman and a 37-year-old woman, outside of a home at 722 Perry St.

Through interviews with witnesses and video footage obtained from a nearby home, investigators believe the 45-year-old male gunman killed six of the victims in the home first, came outside and killed the two women before going back inside and killing himself. The women appeared in distress when they came to the home.

All of the shots were fired before police arrived on scene, Lorah said.

The victims

Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook has not yet released the names of the victims or the shooter. However, the city has revealed that the shooter was related to seven of his eight victims, including a 5-year-old boy, 22-month-old girl and a 24-year-old woman who was eight months pregnant. The eighth victim was a family friend.

The other victims include the 51-year-old woman and 37-year-old woman who were shot outside the home; a 44-year-old woman; a 21-year-old man; a 19-year-old man. How the victims were related has also not been released.

Evidence from the scene

Police recovered a .40 caliber handgun and a partially full magazine still inside of it from the suspect, as well as an empty gun magazine. The gun was registered to the man, Lorah said. Lorah said Sunday he was unaware of any other guns being found at the home when police searched it. He also did not know how many rounds the magazines found on the suspect hold or how many shots were fired.

Police have also recovered several cell phones, which Lorah said investigators are using to determine more details about what occurred, including a possible motive.
