A few things are certain here in Northeastern Pennsylvania once the school year begins.  The leaves start turning, the temperature begins to fall, and the Scranton Cultural Center kicks off our Broadway in Scranton season. I have the pleasure of using my blog to introduce you to our first show of the 2026-2027 season. So, if you miss Mystic Pizza next weekend, don’t say I didn’t warn you!

A Coming-of-Age Story with an ’80s Soundtrack

The hit Broadway tour of Mystic Pizza is rolling into town for one weekend only, October 23–25. Based on the iconic 1988 rom-com that famously launched Julia Roberts into global stardom, Mystic Pizza tells the funny, heartwarming and relatable story of three young women coming of age in a small coastal town. Together, they navigate the hilarious chaos of young love, life choices and the secret ingredients to life—and pizza sauce. It’s a feel-good musical packed with live performances of all your favorite classic ’80s rock and pop hits. The soundtrack features songs from artists like Cyndi Lauper, Huey Lewis and the News and John Mellencamp.

If you are like me, you always have a checklist of what makes a show something you want to see. This show checks many of my boxes. First, there is the killer 1980’s soundtrack. Then, of course, we have an interesting and entertaining story. Finally, my FOMO kicks in when I hear a lot of buzz surrounding a new show coming into this area. I just have to be there!  Oh, and did I mention it is set in a pizza parlor?

Pizza Before the Performance

To be honest, they had me at pizza! That’s my favorite food, and since there is no pizza anywhere as good as NEPA pizza, here is the plan. Why not start the day off with a few slices of pizza and then see a show set in a pizza parlor? Sounds like heaven to me.
