PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania football team fell to the Columbia Lions, 28-27, on Friday night at Franklin Field.
The Quakers led by as many as 17 in the first half at 24-7, but the offense only put three points on the board in the final 30 minutes. Two second quarter interceptions led to 14 Columbia points at the end of the first half. Columbia took its first and only lead of the game on a nine-yard touchdown pass with 6:41 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Penn had a chance to kick a potential game-winning 51-yard field goal as time expired, but the attempt fell just short.
Penn outgained Columbia 446 to 362, but were done in by four turnovers. The Quakers (2-3, 0-2 Ivy League) were led by junior quarterback Karson Siqueiros-Lasky, who threw for a career-high 374 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions in his first collegiate start. Isaac Lee posted a career night as well with 10 catches for 158 yards.
Columbia (4-1, 1-1 Ivy League) was paced by the combo of Chase Goodwin and Bryce Coleman, who hooked up for three touchdowns on the night. Goodwin threw for 237 yards and Coleman had six catches for 90 yards and three scores.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Penn won the toss, deferred their choice to the second half and the No. 1 defense in the country took the field to start the game. The Quakers quickly forced a three-and-out.
Seven plays later, the Quakers were on the board after a Tommy Lafayette rushing touchdown from six yards out. Siqueiros-Lasky had two big throwing third down conversions on the drive, with a 28-yard strike down the sideline to Mason Page and a seven-yard in route to Isaac Lee.
The next Columbia drive ended after four plays when Penn defensive back Ty Cortes picked off a wobbly pass and returned it 12 yards to the Penn 49. The Quakers next drive stalled out at the Lions’ 35, but Mason Walters stepped up and drilled a career-long 52-yard field goal to put his team up 10-0.

A 66-yard kick return from Jayden Drayton set up the Quakers next score. He returned it to the Columbia 34 yard line and was hit late out of bounds, moving the Quakers to the Lions 19. The very next play was a 19-yard touchdown strike from KSL to Page to put the home team up 17-7.

Heading into the second quarter, Columbia’s next drive stalled out on the Penn 37 after a missed fourth down conversion. The Quakers headed right back to the air as Siqueiros-Lasky rolled left and hit Isaac Lee for a 43-yard gain on the first play of the drive. One play later Penn was back in the end zone following a Dante Barone 20-yard touchdown catch from KSL on a tight end seam route. The score put Penn up 24-7.

The Lions next drive stalled out after one first down and they were forced to punt. The Quakers would quickly get back into Columbia territory before a Siqueiros-Lasky pass was picked off and returned 13 yards to the Lions 42. The visitors would make their way down field before Griffin Johnson scored on a three-yard rushing touchdown to make it 24-14.
Three plays after Penn got the ball back, KSL was picked off again, this time at the Penn 48. Columbia would score six plays later on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Chase Goodwin to Bryce Coleman to get the visitors within three at 24-21.
Penn would quickly get down the field one again, going 57 yards across eight plays, but the drive would end on KSL’s third interception of the half on a play to the endzone. The Quakers would go into the half up 24-21.
The Quakers went right down the field to start half two, going 10 plays and 64 yards in the first 5:41. They scored a touchdown on fourth and goal but it was called back for offensive pass interference. After the penalty, they settled for a 28-yard field goal to go up 27-21.

After a Penn drive stalled out, the Lions drove all the way down to the Penn three yard line after a long pass from Goodwin to Coleman. After a false start penalty moved the Lions back to the eight, the next pass from Goodwin was tipped at the line by Derek McCrum and picked off by Duncan McPherson for his first career interception.
Penn got one first down on its next drive before being forced to punt. Nine plays later, Columbia was in the endzone on a nine-yard touchdown pass from Goodwin to Coleman for their second scoring connection of the game. After the extra point, CU took its first lead at 28-27 with 6:41 to go.
The Quakers were forced to punt after a three and out on their next drive, but got the ball back with 3:23 remaining after another defenseive stop. A 38-yard catch from Johannson and a run from Sean Williams Jr. got the home team to midfield before KSL was picked off for a fourth time on the next play with 1:52 to play.
After forcing one last three and out, the Quakers got the ball back with 0:52 to play and no timeouts. A couple long KSL completions to Lee and Page got Penn to the CU 36, but a miscommunication led to a fire drill field goal attempt instead of spiking the ball to set up the kicking team. Walters rushed a 53-yarder as time expired that fell just short.
