ERIE, Pa. — Police say a vehicle investigated for a possible destructive device has been deemed safe, and a part of East 38th Street has reopened near an Erie school.

Police had closed E. 38th St. from Marion St. to Zimmerman Rd. Tuesday morning while a bomb squad and robotic device inspected the vehicle, which was located across from JoAnna Connell Elementary School.

As a precaution, the school was first placed in secure status before students were evacuated by bus to Wilson Middle School.

Erie’s Public Schools said all students and staff remained safe throughout the incident.

EmergyCare and the Erie Fire Department also responded as a precaution while police worked to clear the scene.

Police later said the vehicle was safe and there was no continuing threat. Crews were beginning to leave the area Tuesday afternoon.

The district said it expected the situation to be resolved by dismissal time and would provide parents with additional information about transportation and dismissal procedures.
