There is still no word on what caused a devastating house fire Sunday in Columbus Township, east of Corry, that killed a 14-year-old boy and left a 16-year-old girl in critical condition.

Several children were inside the home at the height of the fire. Sources tell Erie News Now that two additional children were among six family members injured in the blaze.

The 14-year-old boy, who was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital, died from his injuries. The 16-year-old girl remains in critical condition at a Pittsburgh hospital.

Sources also tell Erie News Now that the family was known for adopting and caring for children with special needs.

Corry Area School District Superintendent Sheri Yetzer declined to say how many of those youth may be enrolled in the district, but she issued a statement expressing the district’s condolences to the family and everyone affected by the tragedy.

“Our thoughts are with the children, their family, and everyone affected by this tragic event,” Yetzer said. “We recognize the profound impact on our community and extend our heartfelt concern and compassion to all those involved.”

Yetzer added, “We are also deeply grateful to the first responders for their courageous efforts and dedication to our community.”

The fire took a physical and emotional toll on Corry firefighters, who spent hours battling the blaze. On Tuesday evening, they met with peers from the region’s Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) team to work through the experience.

The American Red Cross confirmed Wednesday that it is helping the family with immediate needs. The family lost everything in the fire.
