With the senior leading the way, Carbondale Area clinched a tie for the Lackawanna Football Conference Division III title with a 40-21 win over Lackawanna Trail. Voglino carried 17 times for 163 yards and four touchdowns on runs of 74 yards in the first quarter, seven yards in the second, three yards in the third and one yard in the fourth.
It is the program’s first share of a title since 2005. It can win its first outright championship since 1973 with a win Friday night against Old Forge.
Family: Father, Tom; mother, Jamie; brother, Mason
Coach: Jeff Arthur
Thoughts on your performance and how you were able to run for as many yards as you did: It’s my line. They did amazing. They blocked awesome. I can’t take any of the credit. It was all them.
Describe your 74-yard touchdown run in the first quarter: It was originally supposed to be a pass to Mason (Voglino). I looked at the safety and I saw him directly looking at me. I knew I couldn’t throw it because it would be a pick if I did throw it. I looked to my left and saw a big alley. I took it and went down the sideline. I saw Ethan Lee and Mason blocking, pushing them out, so I cut it back in and went to the end zone.
The team built a 29-0 lead before Lackawanna Trail cut it to 29-15 in the third quarter. You scored on a 3-yard run to regain the momentum. Talk about that drive: That drive was important. Coach Arthur came to me and said that if we score here, the game was pretty much over. So he was like, ‘Get us down the field and score.’ I was like, all right, and I told the boys, ‘Let’s go.’ The line did their best job blocking and we went down the field and scored.
Carbondale Area has had difficulty in recent seasons. How satisfying is it to be enjoying success this season and clinch a tie for the division: This is big. Carbondale has been known for having rough seasons. Coach Arthur really put us through work this offseason. We were in the weight room. We’ve been lifting Saturday mornings after games this year, watching film on Sunday nights. Coach Arthur always says that good teams’ success comes on off-days. He put that into consideration and we just bonded. It’s working for a different outcome this season.
What has been the key to the team’s success: Everybody has come together. We all bought in this year. The seniors are doing a really good job of leading, too.
Goals for the rest of the season: I’m just hoping we can all come together this week for practice and that we can beat Old Forge. It’s going to be a tough game, they have a really good team. Also, I want to make playoffs. We really want to go far this year. We’re having a good season, I don’t want to end it soon.
What is it like playing with your brother and enjoying the success you have this season: It’s been awesome. Last year, he got hurt so it was rough not seeing him being able to play with me last year. But this year, we both talked and said we were going to have good seasons because it’s my final season with him. We’ve just been having success.
