PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A woman who stopped to help two men with a dead car battery was robbed at gunpoint in Philadelphia’s Hunting Park neighborhood, according to investigators.

The incident happened shortly before 1 p.m. Friday in the 1100 block of West Courtland Street.

Investigators said the two men, seen in surveillance images, were seeking a jumpstart after their vehicle’s battery died.

A neighborhood resident offered to help and allowed the men to connect jumper cables to her vehicle. After the battery was successfully restarted, one of the men allegedly pulled a gun and demanded cash from the woman.

The victim handed over her pocketbook, authorities said.

Police said one suspect fled on foot, while the other drove away in a silver Jeep Compass.

Residents in the area said incidents like this make people hesitant to help others.

“People do things because they’re either desperate or they’re just crazy. So, you know, whoever that kind of person was to get a jump, can’t be so kind anymore. That’s where society becomes unbalanced because you can’t even do the right thing. They got to question, you know, me giving you a bottle of water, are you going to stick me up? Like, ain’t that crazy?” said Mac Johnson of Hunting Park.

So far, no arrests had been made.

Investigators said the suspects should be considered armed and dangerous.
