FOUNTAIN HILL, Pa. – A popular business – offering made-from-scratch scones, brownies, soft pretzels and other tasty treats – is making moves in Lehigh County.

Sunny Moon Sconery, specializing in artisan sweet and savory scones, is planning to reopen at its new, larger location on Thursday at 1061 Seneca St. in Fountain Hill, Owner Celia Strouse told 69 News.

The business previously operated at the Slatington Farmers Market in Washington Township, Lehigh County from August 2024 through August 2026.

Strouse, a resident of Bethlehem Township, had originally wanted to open her business in the Bethlehem area, but she couldn’t find a suitable spot two years ago.

“When I was originally starting out, I was hoping to find a location in the Bethlehem area because that would be convenient for me, but nothing was working out at the time,” Strouse said.

“Then, I just happened to be at the right place at the right time because another bakery was leaving the Slatington Farmers Market. So, I set up shop [there], and it’s been an amazing two years, but now I’m ready to spread my wings with my own, larger location in the Bethlehem area. It’s a beautiful storefront, and I can’t wait to welcome the community.”

The Fountain Hill location’s fall/winter hours will be 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, Strouse said.

To start, the sconery will offer a limited menu, featuring a rotating selection of scones, house-made clotted cream, mixed berry jam and gluten-free, black bean brownies.

“We’re not quite ready to offer all the goodies we have planned for you just yet, but over the next few weeks, we’ll gradually introduce fun, seasonal sips and other creative treats as we ease into our new space and community,” Strouse announced on the business’ social media pages.

Strouse, 49, has worked as a graphic designer for more than 25 years but has had a passion for baking since childhood.

She has fond memories of baking with her mother – who she labels “an amazing baker and cook” – while growing up in Portugal.

After moving to the United States at the age of 13, she fine-tuned her skills as a teenager and continued baking into adulthood. Her treats have become big hits at friends and family gatherings.

“Baking has been a lifelong passion of mine, and so many people have pushed me to open a bakery,” Strouse told 69 News prior to the business’ opening.

“I didn’t think it would be a bakery that focuses on scones, but I really got into scones about a year ago. It came about because I’ve been baking with sourdough for a while, and I tried my first sourdough scones and just fell in love with them – their texture, taste, everything about them.”

At Sunny Moon Sconery, customers can choose from a rotating selection of around nine scone varieties daily, including sweet selections such as almond apricot, blackberry coconut, orange cardamom, peach lemon, cookies and cream, raspberry vanilla, strawberry and white chocolate and chocolate mocha.

Popular picks include blueberry lemon, chocolate chip and cinnamon swirl, Strouse said.

There are also rotating savory varieties such as rosemary parmesan, cheddar jalapeno cilantro, spinach and feta, ginger garlic and cream cheese and pizza (made with basil, oregano, sun-dried tomatoes and shredded mozzarella, topped with pizza sauce, more mozzarella and basil).

“Our classic cream is also staple,” Strouse said.

“… We always have three gluten-free options and one vegan option, but in Fountain Hill, we’ll have two vegan options.”

In addition to selling specialty sourdough scones, Sunny Moon Sconery offers a variety of other freshly baked items including sourdough soft pretzels, coffee cake with various fruit toppings and gluten-free, black bean brownies.

Chia pudding with fruit toppings also is very popular, Strouse said.

“In Fountain Hill, we’ll also have a self-serve coffee and tea bar,” Strouse added.

“We’re teaming up with Bethlehem’s Monocacy Coffee, which has really excellent coffee, and we’ll also have teas from Katydid Hill Farm, which grows all of its own herbs in Pennsylvania.”

At its new location, Sunny Moon Sconery also will continue offering catering as well as scone-making classes.
