Jefferson Health broke ground Tuesday on a new neighborhood hospital in Coopersburg, marking the health system’s fifth such facility in the Lehigh Valley region, according to a statement from the health network.

Lehigh Valley Hospital–Coopersburg will sit on a new healthcare campus spanning Coopersburg Borough and Upper Saucon Township, about nine miles from LVH–Cedar Crest. The facility is expected to open in late 2027 and will include 11 emergency room beds and 10 inpatient beds. Like other Jefferson neighborhood hospitals, it will operate 24 hours a day, year-round, as a licensed and accredited acute care facility with a full-service emergency department.

A Health Center at Coopersburg will also be built on the same site, offering adult rehabilitation, rheumatology, primary care and additional services.

“Breaking ground on our fifth neighborhood hospital is an exciting milestone for Jefferson and the communities we serve,” Dr. Baligh Yehia, MD, president of Jefferson Health, said in the news release. “LVH–Coopersburg represents our ongoing effort to anticipate and respond to the evolving healthcare needs of our communities.”

Jefferson already operates three neighborhood hospitals in the region — LVH–Macungie, LVH–Gilbertsville and LVH–Pocono Creek. A fourth, LVH–Hellertown, located just off Interstate 78, is also set to open in 2027.

Dr. Eric Bean, DO, system director for neighborhood hospitals, said in the release that the facilities have demonstrated their value in emergency situations.

“When minutes matter, neighborhood hospitals save lives,” he said. “Patients experiencing heart attacks, strokes, and other emergencies receive critical care faster and have better outcomes because help is right down the road.”

Patients who require more advanced care can be stabilized at a neighborhood hospital before being transferred to a larger Jefferson facility.
