SCRANTON — Amani Wilondja pressured the Delaware Valley defense all game, but couldn’t get past goalkeeper Shane Kirk.
With less than 10 minutes left and the game tied, the Scranton senior forward had another opportunity and seized it.
Fellow senior forward Yoshua Salumu lifted a pass to Wilondja, who ran the ball down, had a nice first touch, cut to the left to avoid a defender and create space and blasted the ball into the left side of the net with 9:30 left in the game.
“That was a great goal,” Salumu said. “I didn’t see it coming, I just passed the ball to him and told him to run.”
The goal stood up, and No. 4 Scranton defeated No. 5 Delaware Valley, 4-3, on Wednesday night at Scranton Veterans Memorial Stadium to advance to the District 2-4 Class 4A subregional boys soccer semifinals.
Top-seeded Wyoming Valley West will host the Knights on Monday at 6 p.m.
Scranton and Delaware Valley traded goals all game until Wilondja gave the Knights their first lead at the 70:30 mark.
“It was up and down. It was like a roller coaster with emotions,” Scranton coach Brian Marshall said. “I’m glad they battled and stuck it through and we were able to get the victory, but we’ve still got to play a little smarter, but I’m happy with the team. The boys deserve it, they’ve earned it all year with their hard work. I can’t deny their effort.”
The Warriors got started early, when Jay Nagy lifted a corner to Christian Sell, who headed the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead 1:25 into the game.
Scranton answered two minutes later, when Edwin Tiburcio hit Salumu, who poked the ball into the left side of the net.
Then, Dean Mieczkowski lifted a free kick into the box that Eric Choi tracked down and kicked into the right side of the net to give Delaware Valley a 2-1 lead at the 8:04 mark.
Halfway through the first half, Wilondja gained control of the ball, pushed past two defenders and sent in a cross from the left side that Salumu converted for his second goal of the game.
“It’s awesome. We grew up playing together so we are partners,” Salumu said of Wilondja. “We play a lot, we train a lot every day and we could do a lot better every day.”
In second half, the Warriors again took the lead, when Nagy lifted another nice corner and Choi smashed a header into the back of the net at the 50:37 mark.
However, Scranton converted a corner of its own four minutes later to once again tie the game, as Edgar Nolasco hit Tiburcio on the opposite side of the net, and Tiburcio smashed a header off the turf and into the goal.
Wilondja and Salumu continued to pressure the Delaware Valley defense, but Kirk, who finished with five saves, made some nice stops to keep the game tied.
However, Wilondja broke through with a great individual effort on the game-winner.
“He was amazing, both forwards, Yoshua and Amani both putting pressure up there, causing a lot of grief,” Marshall said. “After those few misses, hopefully when he did finish it brings his confidence way back to where he needed it to be so it was massive for him, massive for us. Without those guys, I don’t know that we’d be where we are today. They were brilliant in that sense.”
In the other Class 4A quarterfinals, No. 3 Williamsport defeated No. 6 West Scranton, 4-0, and No. 2 Wilkes-Barre Area outdueled No. 7 Hazleton Area, 2-1, in overtime. The Wolfpack will host the Millionaires on Monday.
