S. HEIDELBERG TWP., Pa. – Construction is underway on a road project in Berks County aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing crashes in South Heidelberg Township.

People involved with the project broke ground on the Krick Lane extension on Wednesday. The project is designed to connect Krick Lane with Wernersville Road and ease congestion at a busy section of the roadway.

Once the project is complete, a section of Wernersville Road will close, and drivers will use the new Krick Lane extension instead. A four-way traffic signal also will be installed at the intersection of Krick Lane, according to Township Manager Sean McKee.

The project has been discussed since the 1990s, but McKee and the board of supervisors decided in 2018 to move forward with the plan.

One of the project’s primary goals is to improve roadway safety. McKee said about 60 reportable crashes, including one fatality, occurred in the area over a 10-year period.

McKee thanked the property owner who agreed to allow the road to be built on his land, along with lawmakers who assisted the township in securing funding for the project.

McKee said the improvements are long overdue and are intended to benefit both residents and motorists. Construction is expected to begin within the next two weeks, with the new roadway expected to open to drivers by mid-2027.
