A motorcyclist was shot by a Bensalem Township police officer Saturday after allegedly pointing a gun at a motorist and then failing to comply with police commands.
Bensalem Township police received a 9-1-1 call at 5:45 p.m. Saturday from a motorist who reported a male on a motorcycle pointed a gun at him on Route 13 near Biddle Lane.
The motorcyclist continued to follow the caller northbound on Route 13, according to police.
The individual is in guarded condition following surgery.
A Bensalem Township officer located the vehicles stopped in traffic near Route 13 and Appleton Avenue, which sits about 3,500 feet from the Bristol Township border.
The officer positioned his patrol vehicle between the car and the motorcycle and exited the vehicle. As the officer moved toward the rear of his vehicle, the motorcyclist was on foot with a gun in his right hand, police said.
Police said the officer issued commands, but the motorcyclist did not comply, leading the officer to discharge his weapon and strike the motorcyclist.
Police immediately began life-saving measures, authorities said.
The motorcyclist was transported to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital in Philadelphia, and he underwent surgery for gunshot wounds. The motorcyclist was listed in guarded condition as of late Saturday.
The identity of the motorcyclist has not been released.
A black handgun was recovered at the scene, police said.
The Bucks County District Attorney’s Office and Bucks County Detectives are investigating the incident.
Route 13 in the area of the shooting was closed late into the night as detectives processed the scene.
