Lehigh Valley residents who missed out on seeing the northern lights last night and hoping for a repeat show tonight are likely to be out of luck.

While the colorful auroras were visible Tuesday night across most of Pennsylvania, the latest forecast for Wednesday night shows they will likely not be seen in our area Wednesday night.

In its forecast, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the phenomenon could be viewable as far south as northern New York on Wednesday night, with the majority of it being visible in Canada. It will not be visible in Pennsylvania at all, according to NOAA’s predictions.

By Thursday night, that southernmost view line will miss almost all of the northeastern United States. Residents in northern states such as Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana and Washington might see it over the next two days.

A number of residents in the Lehigh Valley reported seeing the northern lights about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday while severe solar storms hit the Earth, producing colorful auroras.

In addition to the visible aurora, solar storms can cause power system irregularities and intermittent GPS problems, according to NOAA.
