Both the University of Scranton and Marywood University field hockey teams were eliminated from the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament Wednesday.
Scranton lost to Bowdoin College, 7-0, at Ryan Field in Brunswick, Maine, while Marywood also lost. 7-0, to No. 7 Wesleyan College at Hicks Field in Middletown, Connecticut.
Three-goal second quarters doomed each team.
Emily Ferguson had three goals and one assist to lead Bowdoin (10-7), while Hannah Balmelli added two goals. The Polar Bears outshot Scranton, 20-1, and held a 9-2 edge in penalty corners. Shana Goldsmith had the lone shot on goal for the Landmark Conference champion Royals (17-4). Kiera Lamb had one defensive save and goalie MacLean Thuremer made seven saves.
Meera Patel led Wesleyan (15-4) with two goals and one assist. The Cardinals held the Atlantic East Conference champion Pacers (11-10) without a shot and Marywood goalie Bre Marchiano had 22 saves.
Men’s basketball
At Scranton, Marywood University used a a second-half run to pull away from Keystone College and notch a 79-64 nonconference win Tuesday in its home opener at Insalaco Arena.
It is the Pacers’ 11th straight win over the Giants.
A 3-pointer by Ahmodrion Jones with 9:33 left in the second half brought Keystone within 57-54. But Marywood responded with a 17-5 run over the next 7½ minutes.
A basket by Michel Loftin started the spree. Joe Macciocco followed with a basket and a 3-pointer. After P.J. Murphy scored for Keystone, Ty Cheney hit back-to-back baskets and Loftin tapped in a missed shot. Jones hit a 3-pointer for the Giants, by Shilo Bivins had a dunk and a layup cap the outburst and give the Pacers a 74-59 lead with 2:02 remaining.
Marywood shot 63.3 percent from the field in the second half (19 for 30).
In the first half, Keystone led, 25-22, with 4:37 left, but Marywood reeled off 13 straight points to open a 35-25 lead with 1:16 left. Jones scored the final five points of the half to cut the Pacers lead to 35-30 at halftime.
Loftin led Marywood (2-1) with 24 points and also had 11 rebounds and five assists. Bivins also recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Macciocco chipped in 11 points and Cheney finished with 10 points and six assists.
Jones topped Keystone (1-2) with 22 points and Jden Golding followed with 17.
