It has only been a few days since his senior football season ended with a heartbreaking loss in the playoffs, but Nick Bradley had plenty to be happy about on Wednesday morning.
Abington Heights’ two-sport star made official what he verbally committed to as a freshman and signed his National Letter of Intent to Auburn University, where he will continue his baseball career.
“This means a ton to me,” said Bradley, the reigning Times-Tribune Baseball Player of the Year. “I have gotten to go down and visit and experience the culture and the atmosphere that I will be a part of when I get there. Now, I can finally officially be a part of that. My future is secure, and I am super excited.”
Bradley’s morning signing was part of a celebration at Abington Heights, which carried into the evening. The school held a signing ceremony for seven athletes who signed National Letters of Intent at the start of the early period for most NCAA Division I and II sports, excluding football and basketball.
Bradley, who was honored as the Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year for Pennsylvania in June, had a 9-1 record and a 0.71 earned-run average with 92 strikeouts last spring. He led Abington Heights to a 17-5 record and a share of the Lackawanna League Division I championship. He also batted .493 with seven doubles, two triples, two home runs, 20 runs, and 32 RBIs.
His high school football career, which had a pause in it this season because of an injured left hand, ended last Friday night with a 27-24 loss to Delaware Valley in the District 2 Class 5A championship. Bradley set program records for passing yards with 5,743 yards and passing touchdowns with 63 in a career.
“We didn’t make it as far as we wanted in football, but it was an exciting season, and it was nice accomplishing all the good things that we did as a team,” Bradley, 17, said. “After this signing day, I transition into baseball mode. I have gotten back in the gym and am doing my baseball training.
“Knowing that I have a closed deal with Auburn, it gives me another goal now to have a fantastic baseball season.”
Abington Heights had seven athletes sign NLIs to NCAA Division I schools and another to a Division II school.
