A crash involving two Montgomery County police officers on motorcycles blocked traffic on I-95 southbound in Philadelphia Thursday morning.

Chopper 3 was over the highway as a group of officers on motorcycles took part in a motorcade heading to the WMMR radio “Camp Out for Hunger” event.

As the motorcycles passed Washington Avenue just before 8 a.m., the footage shows one motorcycle officer appear to brush against or strike a van that was disabled on the shoulder. A Pennsylvania State Police spokesperson said investigators believe the van door swung open as the officers went by, causing the officers to lose control and crash.

The chopper video shows one officer appear to lose control of the bike, fall into the roadway and into the path of another motorcycle officer, who then struck the officer in the road and also fell off his motorcycle.

One officer appeared able to get up on his own, while the other appeared to have difficulty getting up.

“Luckily, he was in the middle of the [pack] so there were a lot of officers behind him that were able to render aid to him and make sure he was fine,” Philadelphia police Sgt. Brad Williams said.

Williams said one officer is employed by the Upper Dublin Police Department, and the other is an Abington police officer. Both are in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

The motorcade stopped at the scene for several minutes, blocking multiple lanes of traffic during rush hour.

The officers in the motorcade started to get moving again around 8:15 a.m., and traffic appeared to be flowing normally around 9:30 a.m.

“Camp Out for Hunger” is an annual food drive that collects food for Philabundance. The food drive took on extra significance this year as many people experiencing food insecurity dealt with a lapse in SNAP benefits.

The weeklong food drive kicked off with the “Phil-a-Trunk” event, where classic and muscle cars filled their trunks with food items to deliver to Philabundance.
