A new study has ranked Philadelphia No. 6 among the best sports cities in the nation.

The rankings, compiled by WalletHub researchers, reflect factors such as strong stadium attendance, a vibrant tailgate culture, solid ticket value, and high fan engagement.

According to its website, WalletHub compared 399 cities across more than 50 key metrics related to the five largest sports in the U.S.: football, baseball, basketball, soccer, and hockey.

In WalletHub’s individual sports rankings, Philadelphia ranked No. 8 among the top 10 cities for baseball fans and No. 5 among the top 10 cities for basketball fans.

“Sports can cause rivalries between cities, but can also give people a deep appreciation for places other than their hometown,” said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo.

“A good sports city starts with its fans, fans who care and follow the teams and the players,” said Alfred C. Yen, a professor of law and Dean’s Distinguished Scholar at Boston College Law School, who participated as an expert in the WalletHub study. “That gives fans something to follow year-round. And perhaps most important of all, in great sports cities, a personal relationship develops between the city, the fans, and the teams. When this happens, the fans support the teams and players almost like family, and the teams and players embrace representing the city.”

Philadelphia-area sports fans certainly share their love for their hometown teams: the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, and 76ers.
