“It’s a lovely place to visit, especially in the wintertime. We have tropical plants, palm trees, all types of flowers and of course all of the holiday cheer that you would expect,” said Ben Dunigan from Phipps Conservatory.

The conservatory offers enchanting displays in every room and a winter light garden that lights up the night, promising to get visitors into the holiday spirit. Dunigan, who works at Phipps, loves seeing people’s faces light up at the magic.

“Sometimes, you’ll stand in one section and somebody might come around the corner and see a new room and their jaws drop, or you hear the oohs and the aahs, oh, everybody get a photo and gather together, it’s really nice to see that,” Dunigan said.

In addition to Phipps Conservatory, the UPMC Rink at PPG Place also opened Friday, with people skating around the Christmas tree at the downtown ice rink. The Peoples Gas Holiday Market is usually in Market Square, but this year, it is setting up in the Cultural District starting Nov. 21.

Nearby, people are strolling around The Terminal in the Strip District, embracing a new holiday tradition.

Debbie Goist, visiting from Arizona, shared her thoughts on family during the holidays.

“This is the last piece of my puzzle, my family. So, holidays and family means everything. We love Christmas. You should see our house in Arizona, it’s totally decorated,” Goist said.

The Terminal’s holiday lighting and market starts Friday night, but people were already taking pictures by the Christmas tree and dropping off toys at Puttshack for its Stuff-A-Bus toy drive. Some were dreaming of their own Christmas presents.

“What’s on your Christmas list? What’s your top toy? Probably Nintendo Switch,” said a visitor.
