Erie News Now and Second Harvest Food Bank are celebrating a big milestone, 25 years of our food drive.

This partnership has come a long way from the early days. Karen Seggi, the now retired, Executive Director of Second Harvest Food Bank just started at the food bank when they launched the food drive with Erie News Now.

As Seggi recalled, “The first year we did the food drive, we didn’t know what to expect, we really didn’t it would amount to much and back in that time. It was a lot and people were coming up because they wanted to see the tv personalities. They wanted to be a part of the food drive. They wanted to be part of making their community a better place and it was just contagious.”

The food drive has grown through the years, both in donations and locations.

According to Seggi, “Our first year, we collected a little over 5,000 pounds and 2,000 dollars and last year we collected over 32,000 pounds and 62,000 dollars.”

People from all walks of life come out to help their neighbors.

Greg Hall, the CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank said, “It’s unbelievably inspiring and amazing to see folks who dedicate their time, their effort, their talents to do nothing more than help their neighbors in need.”

The Erie News Now food drive kicks off on Wednesday from 6:00 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.

People can drop off food and monetary donations at locations in Erie, Crawford and Warren counties.
