STOCKHOLM — Two more rookies are healthy and joining the Pittsburgh Penguins pipeline.
Saturday, the Penguins activated injured rookie winger Rutger McGroarty and goalie Joel Blomqvist and assigned both to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
McGroaty suffered an upper-body injury during the offseason, though the Penguins have avoided specifics. He did not participate in training camp or preseason games.
Blomqvist was injured in the second preseason game and missed the remainder of the preseason. On Sept. 26, the Penguins downgraded Blomqvist from day-to-day to out weeks with a lower-body injury.
Blomqvist played 15 NHL games last season, posting an .885 save percentage and a 4-9-1 record.
The Penguins acquired McGroarty from the Winnipeg Jets in the summer of 2024 in exchange for 2023 first-round pick Brayden Yeager. McGroarty, 21, played in eight NHL games, in two stints.
He played in three games at the beginning of the season, then five games near the end of the campaign before he suffered a lower-body injury after blocking a shot. McGroarty had three points, including his first NHL goal.
Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas stated following the preseason that when both were activated, they would be assigned to WBS to earn their way to the NHL club.
