There were matching perfect games in The Times Major Bowling League. In the second game between Duke’s Bar & Grill and Top of the Hill, Duke’s anchor man Gary Frisbie rolled a 300. But Top of the Hill’s anchor Tino Penzone went strike for strike with Frisbie and also fired a 300. Penzone finished the night with a 728 series and Frisbie wound up with a 724. Duke’s won the match, 23½-6½. … Lackawanna Junior College’s football team accepted a bid to the inaugural Huddle House Golden Isles Bowl in Brunswick, Georgia. … In the first meeting in men’s basketball between the local colleges, the University of Scranton beat Marywood University, 93-71, in the Laurel Line Tipoff Classic semifinals at the John Long Center. Charlie Nanick led the Royals with 25 points and T.J. McNulty added 24 points and 10 rebounds. A 53-yard fumble return for touchdown by Mike Bilski in the third quarter helped Old Forge defeat Bishop O’Hara, 40-28, in the Eastern Conference Class A championship game. Chris Kaville and Mike Doran each ran for two touchdowns and Brandon Gatto rushed for 177 yards and a score for the Blue Devils. … Randy Arnold, Bill Burke and Darren Cannon each scored 12 points as the University of Scranton men’s basketball team captured the Pepsi/Weis Market Tip-Off Tournament title with an 80-72 win in the final over host Susquehanna University. Arnold was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. … Tomas Surovy netted a hat trick and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 5-2, to improve their record to 16-0-1-0. The 17 games without a regulation loss to start the season tied an American Hockey League record held by the Portland Pirates, who opened the 1994-95 season with a 14-0-3 record. … After 19 seasons, Tom Lucenti resigned as Montrose football coach. Playing their third game in three days and down four goals after the first period, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins scored five times in the second period and rallied for a 7-6 overtime win at the Hartford Wolf Pack. It was the Penguins’ 11th straight victory. … Scranton Prep captured the program’s first District 2 football championship, beating Berwick, 37-7, in the Class 3A final. Kevin Holmes threw for 115 yards and one touchdown and also had two interceptions on defense, one of which he returned for a touchdown. Tyler Stafursky added 100 rushing yards and two touchdowns. … Garrett Murray helped lead Dunmore to a 28-13 win over Lake-Lehman in the District 2 Class 2A final.
