The University of Scranton advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III men’s soccer tournament with a 4-0 victory over St. Joseph’s on Saturday at Weiss Field.
The Royals (13-0-6) will face No, 17 Williams College on Sunday at 3 p.m. with a berth in the Sweet 16 on the line.
Scranton outshot the Golden Eagles, 24-11 while placing 12 attempts on goal.
The Royals struck first in the 41st minute when Luke Roberto intercepted a pass, drove into the box, and scored to give Scranton a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The lead grew in the 51st minute when Tyler Colton found Matt Capretto at the top of the six-yard box and he ripped a left-footer inside the far post to make it 2-0.
Scranton broke it open with a pair of goals 77 seconds apart.
Cooper Seele beat his defender and found Aiden Metz on a cross for a 3-0 lead.
Then, Owen Potter cleaned up a rebound off a Quinn Pipercic shot and rifled it to the far post to close out the scoring.
Goalkeeper Charlie Smith had four saves for the Royals.
Women’s soccer
The University of Scranton women’s soccer team saw its season come to and end with a 1-0 defeat to Carnegie Mellon in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament in Lexington, Va.
The game’s only goal came in the 14th minute when Audrey Bianco found the back of the net.
The Royals (15-3-3) outshot the Tartans (10-4-5), 6-5, in the second half and had six corner kicks but was unable to find the equalizer.
Goalkeeper Makenzie Van Arsdale had five saves for the Royals.
Women’s volleyball
Juniata College defeated the University of Scranton in the Landmark Conference women’s volleyball championship match, 25-21, 13-25, 16-25, 25-20, 15-6, on Saturday.
Deanna Whelpley had 15 kills and three blocks, Danielle Kramer had 10 kills and six blocks, Cammi Quirk had 39 assists and nine digs, Camryn Hoffman had 14 digs for Scranton.
Marymount 3, Marywood 0: Marywood wrapped up its record-tying volleyball season with a 25-21, 25-19, 25-17 loss to Marymount University in the Atlantic East Conference championship Saturday.
It was the Pacers first championship match since 1993. Marywood matched the program record with 25 wins. The Pacers last achieved 25 victories during the 2003 season.
Genevieve Pollock finished with a team-high eight kills. Carolina Samaniego matched her with eight points.
Ayla Bransford produced 29 assists to finish the season with 901. She sits second all-time in single-season assists.
Women’s cross country
Senior Emily Hopkins led the University of Scranton’s women’s cross country team to a 14th place finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship at Big Spring High School.
Hopkins finished the 6k course in 27th with a time of 22:39.12. Junior Callie Gorman added a 49th place finish in 23:32.52. Freshman Kaitlyn Stibritz finished in 88th, and sophomores Emily Miller and Maura Durcan rounded out scoring placing 106th and 108th, respectively.
Johns Hopkins took home the team victory, while Carnegie Mellon’s Chloe Bonson crossed the line first with a time of 21:24.42.
Men’s cross country
Marywood University finished 10th at the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships at Big Spring High School.
Joseph Cardillo led the way in 32nd place in 26:13.1. It is the third straight season Cardillo claimed all-regional status with a top 35 finish.
Bryce Ryder was 43rd place in 26:41.1. Jakob Seamans was 57th place in 27:03. He set a personal record by 19 seconds at his first regional championship race. Raidan Francis placed 86th in 27:50.7. Jacob Walsh ran a career-best 28:01 to take 95th, setting a PR by 49 seconds.
James Modrovsky finished in 28:23. Ethan Williams had a time of 28:23.7.
Women’s basketball
Host Keystone College suffered a 70-33 defeat to Clarkson University on Saturday afternoon in the final game of the tip-off tournament.
Phaneirra Barnett had eight points, five rebounds and two steals, while Jayda Price chipped in with four points and was named to the all-tournament team for the Lady Giants.
SUNY Westchester 62, Lackawanna 41: Ali Johns scored a team-high 21 points and 11 rebounds but it wasn’t enough as the Falcons fell in Rochester, N.Y.
Alaina ORtiz had eight points and six rebounds, while Sophia Summa checked in with four points, five assist and two steals for the Falcons.
Men’s basketball
Wilkes 97, Keystone 65: At the Marts Center, Wilkes scored 60 points in the first half and rolled to a nonleague win over Keystone to remain undefeated on the year.
Wilkes jumped out to a 60-31 lead at halftime, hitting 13 of 16 from the free-throw line in the opening 20 minutes.
Colin Ackerman had 19 points for Wilkes with four rebounds and four assists, while Jack Argento had a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Ahmodrion Jones had 18 points for Keystone.
