North Pocono continues to make history, and Scranton Prep and Lackawanna Trail added onto their state playoff legacies.
All three Lackawanna Football Conference teams represented District 2 in the first round of the PIAA playoffs and emerged victorious.
They are all in the quarterfinals of their respective classifications this weekend.
North Pocono, which played in only its second state game, rallied late to a 40-36 win over Bishop Shanahan in the Class 4A first round in Downingtown. The Trojans won the 13th game of their season, which broke the school record of 12 in a season held by themselves and the 1991 team that did not have a chance to play in the state playoffs due to a complicated ratings formula.
North Pocono’s win was the first for an LFC team in a Class 4A state game since the PIAA moved to six classifications in 2016.
The only other win in Class 4A came when Scranton won a subregional game over Quakertown, 19-13, in 2002.
North Pocono also joined an exclusive group of programs within the LFC. The Trojans are the eighth program to win 13 games in a season. They join Valley View, Dunmore, Riverside, Old Forge, Lackawanna Trail, Lakeland, and Scranton Prep.
Valley View has the most wins in a single season with 15 during its undefeated run to the PIAA Class 2A championship in 1992.
North Pocono will play District 12 champion Cardinal O’Hara (9-4), which lost to Bonner-Prendergast, Roman Catholic, La Salle College, and St. Joe’s Prep, on Friday at 7 p.m. at Whitehall High School’s Zephyr Stadium.
Cole West, a junior for the Trojans, had three receptions for 49 yards. He has 1,454 receiving yards in his career and passed Nick Bell (2009-11) for the school record. He is second with 81 receptions, chasing Bell’s mark of 92.
North Pocono senior running back Josiah Gray ran for 139 yards and scored three touchdowns. He now has 1,104 yards rushing on 142 carries with 15 rushing touchdowns this season.
Moving on
Scranton Prep is in the quarterfinals of Class 3A and will face a familiar foe in District 11 champion Northwestern Lehigh (13-0) on Friday at 7 p.m. at Berwick High School’s Crispin Field.
Northwestern Lehigh ended Scranton Prep’s season with a 27-6 win in 2023 and a 34-0 win in 2024.
The Cavaliers’ win over Mifflinburg, 28-21, last Friday was the program’s fifth win in the state playoffs. Four of those wins have come against District 4 champions. Scranton Prep defeated Montoursville, 37-13, in 2016 and 45-7 in 2018, and Loyalsock, 31-28, in 2017. The other win in the state playoffs came against District 12 champion Nuemann Goretti, 23-16, in 2023.
Scranton Prep senior quarterback Will McPartland ran for 125 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Mifflinburg. He has 905 yards rushing with 27 touchdowns despite missing the first three games of the year while recovering from a torn ACL suffered in last season’s state playoffs.
McPartland has also thrown for 1,508 yards and 11 touchdowns this season.
Scranton Prep also improved its record to 103-23 in the 10 years since the PIAA moved to six classifications in 2016.
Lions roar
Lackawanna Trail earned a hard-fought win over previously undefeated District 4 champion Line Mountain, 31-20, in the PIAA Class 1A first round at Kemp Memorial Stadium.
The 31 points scored by the Lions were the most against Line Mountain since a 36-34 win over Steelton-Highspire in Week 6.
Lackawanna Trail also held the Eagles to a season-low point total. Montgomery also gave up 20 points to Line Mountain in the District 4 championship game.
It was the 30th state playoff game, which included subregional finals, for Lackawanna Trail. The Lions earned their 16th win overall.
Since 2016, Lackawanna Trail has won 14 state playoff games. The Lions reached the PIAA Class 1A final in 2018 and the semifinals in 2019.
In the last three seasons, Lackawanna Trail is 36-4 overall. This is the fourth time in program history that the Lions have won at least 12 games. They won 14 in 2018, 13 in 2023, and 12 in 2000.
Senior running back Isaac Ryon broke the LIAA single-season record for rushing yards with 2,776 and rushing touchdowns in a season with 46.
He has 4,869 yards in his career and passed Valley View’s Sean Fisher (4,767) for ninth on the LIAA career list.
Lackawanna Trail senior quarterback Tyler Jervis improved his career record to 23-3 as a starter.
Lackawanna Trail (12-1) will play District 12 champion Belmont Charter (9-1), which defeated District 3 champion York Catholic, 36-20, in a subregional game, on Friday at 7 p.m. at Northern Lehigh High School’s Bulldog Stadium.
