Central Catholic’s Roman Thompson strides into the end zone against North Allegheny during the WPIAL Class 6A championship game Saturday.

There was a line of demarcation among the elite high school football teams with the top teams in the three highest classifications surviving for the most part into the state elite eight.

However, teams in Class A, 2A and 3A weren’t as fortunate, suffering season-ending losses.

Of the 15 teams in the three highest classes, only two teams lost and dropped out of the Top 5 for good.

The three lower classes, though, were a combined blah 8-7.

Also last week, another 2024 state champion was bounced when Troy fell to Southern Columbia in the Class 2A District 4 finals.

That leaves Bishop McDevitt in 5A, Northwestern Lehigh in 3A and Bishop Guilfoyle Academy in A still alive in search of a repeat performance.

Troy was one of two top-ranked teams to lose a week ago, both in the two lowest classifications. Fort Cherry was stunned by Laurel in the WPIAL Class A semifinals.

They were replaced at No. 1 by Southern Columbia in Class 2A and Port Allegany in Class A.

The four highest classes remain the same at the top with LaSalle College in 6A, Pine-Richland in 5A, Susquehanna Township in 4A and Northwestern Lehigh in 3A still at No. 1.

There will be more changes this week with seven head-to-head showdowns between state-ranked teams, including the top four teams in Class 4A squaring off.
