BENSALEM TOWNSHIP, PA — She was born in England, but cricket isn’t her game.
Jean Spencer Batten is the “No. 1 fan” of the Philadelphia Phillies, according to U.S. Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick, who joined her to celebrate Batten’s 100th birthday.
“What an honor to celebrate the remarkable Jean Spencer Batten, one of (my district’s) most special treasures and the Phillies‘ #1 fan, on her 100th birthday,” the congressman said.
Batten was born in Northampton, England, in 1925.
She met U.S. Air Force serviceman Robert Batten at a dance while he was stationed in London during World War II.
They married in September 1946 and set sail on a seven-day transatlantic journey to begin their “American dream” in Bucks County, Fitzpatrick said.
“Bob Batten built their home in Bensalem with his own hands, and together they raised a beautiful family, filling their days with laughter, love, faith, and adventure until his passing in 1997,” Fitzpatrick said.
So what is Batten’s secret to a long, happy life?
“A green vegetable at every dinner. One cookie to ‘cue the end of the meal.’ And a gin and tonic at 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays,” she replied.
