Despite several ponderances across the NHL, no team submitted a claim for Pittsburgh Penguins winger Philip Tomasino on Wednesday, and he cleared waivers at 2 p.m. EST.

The Penguins waived Tomasino on Tuesday after the winger had just one assist in nine games this season. The team had signed him to a one-year, $1.75 million contract on July 1. The Penguins are able to bury $1.15 million of his salary cap hit in the minors.

The team did not specifically announce Tomasino would report to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, but unless the player requests a contract termination or chooses to leave the organization, there are no alternatives.

Last season, Tomasino scored 11 goals and 23 points in 50 games with the Penguins, who acquired him for a fourth-round pick from the Nashville Predators in November. Tomasino had one assist in 11 games with Nashville before the trade.

Per new collective bargaining rules, the “paper transactions” in which players would remain with the NHL club were ended. Now, players who clear waivers must report to the minor league team and play at least one game to be eligible for a recall.
