Reading Recreation Commission will hold its Halloween Hay Ride and Haunted House on Oct. 17 and 18 at Schlegel Park.

The family-friendly hayride around the park is not scary, said Dr. Daphne Klahr, executive director of the commission.

“There’s a beautiful view,” she said. “From the top of Schlegel, you can overlook the whole city. It’s absolutely gorgeous.”

The haunted house is another story.

The park’s pool house is transformed into a spooky attraction that is very scary, Klahr said.

“Just be forewarned,” she said.

In their roles as ghosts and ghouls, students from nearby Alvernia University promise to give a good-natured scare to those brave enough to enter.

Despite the fright, the haunted house has proved very popular in past years with steady traffic each night, Klahr said.

The two-night event will also include a bounce house, face painting, s’more making around a campfire and other activities.

Hot chocolate and other refreshments will be available.

“Come out, have a drink, eat some snacks and hang out,” Klahr said. “Just get some of the fall fun.”
