ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Two Allentown men have been charged in connection with a fatal shooting on Wednesday evening on North 8th Street that left a Berks County man dead, authorities announced Thursday.

District Attorney Gavin P. Holihan and Allentown Police Chief Charles Roca said Jason Gonzalez, 25, and Garfield McLean Jr., 30, face felony counts of criminal homicide, criminal conspiracy to commit homicide and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

Gonzalez also faces a misdemeanor count of recklessly endangering another person after a second individual at the scene was nearly struck by gunfire.

The victim, identified as 24-year-old Jahlik R. Colon of Temple, Pa., was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the doorway of an apartment building at 115 N. 8th St. around 5:42 p.m. Wednesday, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Lehigh County Coroner’s Office ruled his death a homicide caused by gunshot wounds.

Investigators said surveillance cameras and license plate readers helped identify Gonzalez’s vehicle — a 2001 silver Honda Accord — in the area minutes before the shooting. The video showed Gonzalez leaving the car and running toward the scene, then returning after the gunfire. McLean was identified as the driver.

Police stopped the Honda around 7:12 p.m. on the 8th Street Bridge. Gonzalez and McLean were taken into custody less than two hours after the killing. A 9mm handgun with a live round in the magazine was found inside the car, along with a 1-year-old child and the child’s mother. The woman was not charged and was released with the child.

Both defendants remain in Lehigh County Jail without bail and are scheduled for preliminary hearings at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 8 in Lehigh County Central Court.

Authorities said both men have prior felony convictions, prohibiting them from legally possessing firearms.

Holihan and Roca credited the quick arrests to community cooperation and technology, including city surveillance and license plate readers. The investigation is ongoing, but no additional charges or arrest warrants have been filed at this time.

The case is being investigated by Allentown Detective Ariel Vidal and Lehigh County Homicide Task Force Detective Kevin Mriss.
