The Allentown School District will move forward with a major renovation of the Dieruff High School practice field after the school board approved additional design and planning for the project on Thursday, the district said in a news release.
The comprehensive upgrades to the practice field at 820 E. Tilghman St. will include a new field house, improved weight and restroom facilities, portable bleachers, upgraded lighting, soil rehabilitation, a synthetic turf field, and a new track with expanded opportunities for track and field events. Early cost estimates place the project between $15 million and $18 million.
Construction is expected to begin in spring 2026. The district will begin the design, bidding, and procurement process from late November through December, with additional approvals anticipated in early January.
Superintendent Carol D. Birks said the investment represents progress for students and athletic programs.
“Enhancements to our infrastructure represent an important step forward for our students, our athletic programs, and the entire Dieruff High School learning community,” Birks said. “Research shows that students who participate in sports and extracurricular activities are more likely to attend school regularly, perform better academically, and are better prepared for success after graduation.”
The school board first announced plans for the transformative project on Oct. 25. District officials said the investment will provide long-overdue upgrades to areas of the community that have historically lacked comparable athletic facilities.
