The City of Meadville Fire Department is urging residents to check their smoke alarms after an increase in non-certified devices found in local homes.
Fire Chief officials stress that all smoke alarms should be UL-certified, meaning they have been tested by Underwriters Laboratories, an internationally recognized safety organization. UL certification ensures alarms meet strict standards for smoke detection, sound levels, electrical safety, and reliability.
Non-certified alarms, often sold through discount online marketplaces, may fail during an emergency. Residents are advised to look for a UL Listed mark, clear manufacturer information, and compliance with NFPA 72 standards.
Certified alarms are widely available at reputable retailers.
