Pennsylvania’s Auditor General says the commonwealth’s Department of Health has essentially lost track of millions of dollars spent in the last four years. A recent audit of the Emergency Medical Services Operating Fund found that $37.9 million was spent through the Department of Health. The audit had no findings regarding 75% of the money from that fund, which went to the regional councils and the statewide advisory councils. That means $29.3 million is essentially unaccounted for. Auditor General Tim Defoor says the Department of Health needs to implement changes because this is the fifth consecutive performance audit that revealed issues with distributing funds. Auditors recommend enforcing some new policies, like withholding payments entirely until all required documentation is submitted.
