READING, Pa. – Thanksgiving is a time to be grateful for what you have and give back to the community around you. In Reading, several organizations are leading efforts to make sure as many families as possible have dinner on the table this Thursday.

“A lot of people, especially right now, they’re kind of struggling financially. So, this is a little help for them, so we’re blessed to do it,” said Tony Bilotta, of One Luv Outreach.

As Thanksgiving approaches, local organizations are making sure as many families as possible are taken of.

“We have a Thanksgiving giveaway. So, for about 140 families — turkeys, food, toiletries, everything — just to bless the community,” Bilotta said.

One Luv Outreach in Reading had all hands on deck, giving out all necessities a family could need on Thanksgiving.

“There’s toiletries there. We have candy. We have everything to make a Thanksgiving meal. We have a turkey,” Bilotta said.

Over at Rehoboth Seventh-Day Adventist Church, volunteers were doing their part.

“We’re doing our monthly food pantry distribution, which is the fourth Monday of each month. We take care of about 180 families per month,” said Catrice Davis-Ford, of Rehoboth Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

This time, it’s holiday-themed.

“We’re giving out turkeys. We’re giving out chicken. We also are giving…Cornish hens. We are giving out groceries, some pastries,” said Rabiel Torres, senior pastor at Rehoboth Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

About 100 turkeys were handed out because organizers say it’s just as important to give back as it is to give thanks.

“For us, it’s really, really a blessing to be able to give back to the community,” Torres said.

In partnership with Helping Harvest, it is a collaborative effort to ensure everyone has a holiday to remember.

“It means a lot that they get together with their family and friends, and I know sometimes the holiday may be sad for some people, but just to help brighten their afternoon or day, as they eat the meal and enjoy the different ones that they love,” Davis-Ford said.

More giveaway events are scheduled in the city throughout the week.
