ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Allentown Police say they arrested a man who they say shot and killed another man on Labor Day in 2024, after a woman pushed an officer during a foot pursuit of the suspect.
Hector Martinez, 26, is charged with homicide, persons not to possess, use, manufacture, etc- firearms, firearms not to be carried without a license, and recklessly endangering another person, according to a news release from the Allentown Police Department.
According to city police, Martinez was arrested Monday in the 1300 block of West Walnut Street after being seen by a uniformed patrol officer that was passing through the area. City police said Martinez tried to run away after the officer verbally commanded him to stop.
The officer began to chase Martinez when a woman, later identified as Kaelis Aviles, of Whitehall, tried to intervene by pushing the officer and blocking the officer’s path, according to the news release.
After a short foot pursuit, two officers were able to take Martinez and Aviles into custody, city police said. Aviles is charged with obstructing administration of law and disorderly conduct.
A bookbag that Martinez was holding was opened during the incident, with its contents falling to the ground, according to city police. The bookbag contained suspected fentanyl and marijuana, as well as cash, according to the news release.
Martinez is accused in a deadly 2024 shooting. Officers were sent to the area of North Law Street and Liberty Street for a reported shooting on September 2, 2024, city police said.
City police said officers found evidence consistent with gunshots being fired, and a short time later the victim, Terrence Brunson, 39, arrived at a local area hospital in a private vehicle. Brunson later died at the hospital.
The cause of death was determined to be a single gunshot wound to the chest, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide by the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office, city police said in the news release.
As a result of the investigation into the shooting, authorities issued an arrest warrant for Martinez. Officers arrested Martinez after the pursuit Monday, authorities said.
Martinez is currently being held in Lehigh County Jail and will face a preliminary arraignment Tuesday morning.
