Lace up your skates and hit the ice at the Schenley Rink, check out this year’s Carnegie Trees exhibit at the CMOA or see a holiday-themed bird show, Jingle Bell Flock, at the National Aviary — here’s what to do in Pittsburgh this weekend.
Outdoors
Though county-run ice rinks in North Park and South Park won’t open this year until Dec. 20, the City of Pittsburgh’s venerable Schenley Skating Rink is ready for action. The rink is open daily (save Thanksgiving and Christmas day) through March. Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for kids 17 and under, and $5 for vets and seniors. Skate rental? $3 for all.
Exhibit
The Carnegie Museum of Art’s beloved holiday attractions are up for the season. This year’s rendition of the Carnegie Trees features five towering Fraser firs in the Hall of Architecture decorated with ornaments handmade by the museum’s Women’s Committee, with a theme of global exploration inspired by Jules Verne’s classic “Around The World in 80 Days.” And just like every year since 1957, the Carnegie’s Neapolitan presepio is on display — a sprawling, lavishly detailed nativity complete with angels, shepherds, drummers and oxen, all crafted 200 years ago or more. Both exhibits run through Jan. 11.
Birds
New at the National Aviary starting Fri., Nov. 28, is Jingle Bell Flock, which blends holiday-themed songs with a free-flight bird show. Now through December, you can watch an American Crow indulge its natural inclination to grab trinkets, in order to fill a holiday stocking with candy canes and more, set to favorite melodies. (“Jingle Bird,” “Silver Gulls,” you get the picture.) A Black Kite, a Grey Crowned-Crane, a toucan and a hooded vulture also feature. There are two shows daily, the cost a $5 add-on to regular admission.
Music
A young music phenomenon makes her Pittsburgh Symphony debut. Japanese-born violinist Himari, 14, is currently touring the world. At Heinz Hall, she’ll play Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1. The program also includes Haydn’s Symphony No. 100, Carlos Simon’s Festive Fanfare and Overture, and a selection of favorite Strauss waltzes. The performances, conducted by the PSO’s Manfred Honeck, are Fri., Nov. 28 and Sun., Nov. 30.
Music
It’s as reliable as Thanksgiving: Each year, the Saturday after that holiday brings us Suite Life: A Celebration of Billy Strayhorn and Gene Kelly. This year, the Kelly Strayhorn Theater’s namesakes are feted with a Cuban beat. Musical director Hugo Cruz will guide a seven-piece band, vocalist Chantal Joseph and special guests through new takes on songs by the composer of “Take the ‘A’ Train” and “Lush Life.” The show is Sat., Nov. 29.
Theater
Wait, it’s a one-man “Die Hard,” live? Nope — “Yippee Ki Yay” is a one-man “parody celebration” of the 1988 action classic. British performer Richard Marsh created the live stage show and plays all the roles. It premiered in 2022 at the Edinburgh Fringe and has since toured internationally. “Yippee Ki Yay” comes to the Greer Cabaret Theater from Tue., Dec. 2, through Dec. 21, courtesy of the Pittsburgh CLO.
